Mechanical Systems

Problem – Bearings can fail unexpectedly causing costly downtime on a production line.
Solution – IR photographs will show bearings running at a significantly high temperature when compared to similar bearings or the equipment they are attached to. Lubrication or timely replacement of the bearing can save costs and avoid production interruptions.
Problem – Misalignment of motor couplings will eventually lead to failure of the coupling.
Solution – The repeated stresses and strains put on a misaligned rotating coupling produces heat that shows up on an IR photograph. This allows timely realignment and, if needed, replacement of the coupling, eliminating disruptions in production.

Problem – Poor airflow through motors is not apparent and can lead to failures.
Solution – Poor airflow will cause the motor casing to heat up which shows up on an IR photograph. In the picture above the motor on the left is hotter than the motor on the right and has poor ventilation. The image is rendered in a colored pallet on the left and in a greyscale on the right.
Electrical Systems

Problem – Identification of loose and deteriorated electrical connections is time consuming and cannot be done while equipment is running. If left unattended loose connections can fail interrupting production
Solution – Loose or deteriorating connections produce heat and show up on an Infrared (IR) photograph. They can be tightened, cleaned or replaced fixing the problem.
Flat Roofs

Problem – Leaks inside a building can show up a long distance from their source on the roof. If the source of a leak (or leaks) is not located and small roof sections replaced, the whole roof may have to be replaced to eliminate the problem. This can be prohibitively expensive.
Solution – Water soaked roofing material retains heat and cold longer that the surrounding dry roof. Hidden moisture can be seen in early morning hours as cold spots, or in the early evening hours as warm spots. Locating the source of leaks in this way allows replacing a small sections of the roof saving a substantial costs.
